Airway Orthodontics in Pennington, NJ
At Pennington Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, we look beyond straight teeth. Airway-focused orthodontics considers the relationship between jaw development, oral structures and breathing to help identify orthodontic factors that may contribute to airway and sleep-related concerns. With more than 35 years of clinical experience, our team serves families from Pennington, Trenton, Princeton, and Hopewell in a bright, welcoming environment.
Airway-Focused Care
How Jaw Development and Breathing Are Connected
The size and shape of the jaws and palate influence more than how the teeth fit together. When the upper jaw is narrow or the bite is not developing as expected, it can affect the space available for the tongue and the nasal airway. Airway orthodontics takes these relationships into account during every evaluation. Rather than focusing only on the position of the teeth, our team considers how jaw growth, oral structures, and breathing patterns work together, so we can identify orthodontic factors that may be contributing to airway and sleep-related concerns. Because we offer pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, and general dentistry under one roof, we can follow these factors over time and recommend care when it is most helpful.

Signs to Watch For
When an Airway-Focused Evaluation May Help
Many families first notice habits that seem unrelated to the teeth. Habitual mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, teeth grinding, and a narrow or crowded upper arch can all be reasons to take a closer look at how the jaws and airway are developing. Adults may notice snoring or mouth breathing alongside crowding or bite concerns. These signs do not always mean a problem is present, but they are a good reason to schedule an orthodontic evaluation. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven, which gives our team the opportunity to identify developing concerns early. When symptoms point to a possible sleep-related condition, we work together with your physician or sleep specialist as part of your overall care.
Our Approach
Airway Orthodontic Evaluation and Treatment Options
Your visit begins with a thorough orthodontic exam that looks at jaw growth, bite alignment, palate width, and oral structures, supported by low-radiation digital X-rays and digital scanning. We then explain what we found and whether orthodontic treatment may be helpful. When appropriate, treatment may include orthodontic appliances or expansion. For growing children, palatal expansion can widen the upper jaw while it is still developing. For adult patients, our orthodontist may use a MARPE (miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander) to widen the upper jaw. Expansion can be combined with traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or Angel clear aligners to complete the alignment of the teeth and bite. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient.

Airway Orthodontics Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Airway Orthodontics
What is airway orthodontics?
Airway orthodontics is an approach to orthodontic care that considers the relationship between jaw development, oral structures, and breathing. In addition to straightening teeth and correcting the bite, our team looks at how the size and shape of the jaws and palate may affect the airway. This helps us identify orthodontic factors that may contribute to airway and sleep-related concerns, such as mouth breathing or snoring.
What signs might suggest my child could benefit from an airway-focused evaluation?
Habitual mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, teeth grinding, a narrow upper jaw, and crowded teeth can all be reasons to schedule an evaluation. These signs do not necessarily mean there is a problem, but an orthodontic exam can help determine whether jaw development or bite alignment may be a contributing factor. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven.
What treatments are used in airway orthodontics?
When appropriate, treatment may include orthodontic appliances or expansion. Palatal expansion widens the upper jaw to create more room for the teeth and can increase the space available for nasal breathing. Expansion is often followed by braces or Angel clear aligners to complete the alignment of the teeth and bite. Every treatment plan is based on a thorough exam and tailored to the individual patient.
Can adults benefit from airway orthodontics?
Yes. Adult patients with sleep apnea, mouth breathing, and snoring can also benefit from expansion. Because the upper jaw has finished growing in adults, our orthodontist uses a MARPE (miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander) to widen the upper jaw. During your consultation, we will review your records and discuss whether this approach is appropriate for you.
Can orthodontic treatment help with sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea should be diagnosed by a physician or sleep specialist, and orthodontic treatment is not a standalone cure. However, when the structure of the jaws or palate is a contributing factor, orthodontic appliances or expansion may be one part of a broader care plan. Our integrative approach means we work together with your healthcare providers so that orthodontic care supports your overall health goals.
Are payment options available for airway orthodontic treatment?
Yes. We offer CareCredit for patients who need payment plans, as well as interest-free in-house financing for our orthodontic patients. Our team will also help you understand and maximize your dental insurance benefits during your consultation.
